Bertil Hult founded EF in 1965 with the belief that people learn best through immersion and hands-on experiences. He struggled with traditional classroom learning as a high school student with dyslexia in Sweden, and he realized during a summer job in England that he was picking up English effortlessly by living the language, not studying it. This led him to become one of the early founders of immersion learning.

All EF Academy New York graduates earn a high school diploma. You can also choose to enroll in the full IB Diploma Programme or take individual IB or AP courses based on your interests and future university and career plans.
The boarding school's campus is located in Thornwood, New York, only a 45-minute train ride from downtown Manhattan. A shopping center and local restaurants are within walking distance from the campus as well.

At our private school in New York, we keep class sizes small so you focus on building skills and knowledge through group projects that bring concepts to life. You also tackle real challenges and find real solutions through field study and service learning. At our boarding school in New York, we provide a range of after-school activities for student participation, spanning from sports to cooking clubs. Some options include the Astronomy Club, Model United Nations, Pickleball, and STEAM Club. Feel free to discuss with your advisors to join those that ignite your passion the most!
You can compete in varsity sports with other local league schools. Choose from varsity soccer, volleyball, basketball, cross-country running, tennis, or cheerleading! There are also intramural and club sports you can join during your time at EF Academy New York!
